Creative Endeavors began at the end of 2008. The first post documented very well why I branched out and started this blog. I've pasted it below.

Why Creative Endeavors?

An online dictionary defines endeavor in the following ways:

1. A conscientious or concerted effort toward an end; an earnest attempt.

2. Purposeful or industrious activity; enterprise.

3. To attempt (fulfillment of a responsibility or an obligation, for example) by employment or expenditure of effort.

4. To work with a set or specified goal or purpose.

This is what I am doing as I explore new facets of me. It is easy to get caught up in the daily responsibilities of life and focus on what comes easy. Lists. Analysis. Schedules. Agendas. These have become strengths that I am comfortable with. I understand this territory. It fits well in the time frame of any given day.

I'm learning that there are other things out there that I actually enjoy and am even pretty good at. Although, I'll easily admit that I first picked up the crochet needle and a ball of yarn because I was new to this staying-at-home deal and needed a sense of completion. A concrete example of something that I did that day. The result was my first basic granny square.

Knit. Crochet. Bake. Scrapbook. Tie-dye. Paint. Decorate. Sewing?

I still love the look and feel of this blog and I still am stretching and challenging myself in new ways. In 2009 I defined myself as a left-brained, scientific, analytical gal who is discovering the strength of her right, creative side. I would venture to state that in 2011, the creative side of me isn't so foreign anymore. I'm entering an era where I'm finding balance. In doing so, it makes sense for all of me to be represented in the same blog. As a result, Campbell Crew has been formed. Please update your reader and continue to journey with me!

Delicious Tradition

The best birthday treat ever. Celebrating birthday's with the family is always a treat - especially our traditional ice cream cake. Barber enjoyed this too. He picked cookies n' cream and chocolate chip cookie dough as his flavors.

So that's brownie muffincakes for his school celebration, a yummy ice cream cake for our celebration with family and plans are in the works for his "friend" birthday party. Someone wants a football cake. Pictures will be posted...

Barber's Birthday Treats

Barber loves chocolate. I know 'love' is a strong word but he doesn't just like it. I mean, if he were a sweet, he would want to marry chocolate. LOL.

It was no surprise that he wanted brownies as a treat for his school snack celebrating his birthday. I didn't think that frosted brownies cut in squares was birthday-ish quality so this is what I came up with. I melted the chocolate and butter and mixed all the ingredients but then instead of pouring it in a pan, I used my mini muffin pan. Perfect kid portion if you ask me.

The brownie-muffin-cakes were then frosted and decorated with some sprinkles. This is when I made my big discovery that I wanted to share with you...

Notice how the sprinkle coverage is pretty good. This was a first for me. Normally these sprinkles drive me crazy. It seems that however I drop them, they roll off the treat and onto my counter or floor more often then not. Not this time!

Notice the red contraption? Do you know what it is? It's a melon baller. I don't know if that is it's official name but that's what we've always called it. The smaller side is perfect for this. You just scoop up some sprinkles and then allow them to spill out the hole of the melon baller onto your frosting. This contraption allowed the task of sprinkle coverage to go so smoothly it was almost fun! Trust me - you have to try this the next time you are decorating your baked goodies.

Pretty in Pink and Green

No little girls for me...so it's nice to make a baby afghan for a friend. This one was a gift to one of Simms coworkers. They had another little girl. I'm not a huge pink fan but the yarn was speckled with it which worked for me. My favorite is the edging. It's soft and pretty. Perfect to wrap a little one in.

Earth Day - Ideas

When I was teaching, it was easy to celebrate Earth Day and talk about how to make a positive impact on our environment. It often coincided with our Ecology unit. It's really about being good stewards.

So how do I do that with my kiddos? What do they see in our lives that tells them we care and desire to be good stewards. One aspect is through the products we use - they are safe for the environment as well as for us. They also witness that we use reusable items more and more rather than disposable. One example is the shopping bag. Sounds simple but it is truly an easy way to make a difference. Another example has been displayed on this blog quite a bit - my crocheted sponges, face scrubbies, body scrubbies, and dish scrubbies.

Where Is My Gun?

Glue gun that is. That is the only kind that is allowed in our home - and the only one that these fingers ever plan to touch. It also became a necessity when we broke out the little kids craft pictured below.

I think Promises almost choked on her own saliva when Jeter showed her what we did that afternoon. I am creative but I'm a bit challenged in the crafty department. Yes, I think there is a difference. I'm not saying I can't do it (crafts)...it just is more like work for me than fun. BUT...it is fun for my boys and therefore, it is important enough for me to tackle.

The directions said to use craft glue. They are NUTS. Crazy as cashews. Do they think Mommy's like to clean up annoying messes and have time for a project to last 3+ hours?!? Not this Mommy. Not to mention the lost attention of the child after the first 15 minutes.

We tried the craft glue. The advantage was that Jeter could do the whole thing by himself. The disadvantage was that he became increasingly frustrated with how long the project was taking and not turning out the way he anticipated.

Enter the glue gun. Granted the kiddos aren't allowed to touch the glue gun and therefore it morphs into a more parent-directed craft but my boys were A-OK with that. They showed me where they wanted the glue, I put it there and they placed the material on top of the glue. Easy peasy. The best part? It. Dries. Fast.

That's A Lot of Yarn

This isn't even all of the hats I crocheted last Fall. Lots of soccer practices and evenings later...

So what happened to all of them? Lot of presents. Many to people that I don't know. The guidance counselor at the boys' school is a tremendous resource. She coordinates a number of activities to benefit families throughout our district. We talked and she said that she would love to bless families with my hats. I don't think she knew exactly what she was saying yes to. Her eyes lit up when I brought in a bag full of these beauties. I'm praying some little kiddos had heads warmer than they would have been this winter.

Hats R Us

Hats - this was my fall focus last year. And, if you received a gift from us at Christmas, it probably included a hat for you or your kiddos - or both!

I love when I find bargains on yarn that is good quality. My fingers happily crocheted these beauties while I decompressed in the evening. Yes - this is totally a stress reliever for me. My sister thinks that I should sell them. One of Simms' coworkers thinks I should join etsy. Me? I don't know. Would it still be a stress reliever or would that now become a stress builder?

So...for now...I continue to enjoy making things and blessing others.

These were all gifts for family. I was so blessed to learn that one of the little guys that received one of my hats wore it for two days straight! Precious. You just can't put a price tag on that!

Celebrating 70

My parents turned 70 last year - both of them. So Promises and I planned a party honoring them (Dad helped a bit - he thought it was only for mom!). How else would we know who to invite. The two of them are involved in so many ministries at church, without Dad's help we wouldn't have much success in creating the invite list.

Here are some of the goodies that we created for them and their guests...

Mom's brownies are the best but we decided to turn it up a notch by adding a drizzle of chocolate and caramel...

...to some we even added some chopped pecans!

Prepping for the pretzels that just about everyone enjoys

Homemade chocolate chip cookies are also a must have in our family

Stuffed eggs - also something that is present at almost every family gathering

And finally, the cake. Their names were across the bottom - that's why that is cropped out of the picture. We had almost 40 guests so a large cake was called for. Chocolate and vanilla - marbled in the middle. They loved everything - and that is really what it is all about. Blessing the ones you love.

Regardless, I have to say, crepes for breakfast are absolutely wonderful. Simms is awesome at making the crepes and we put out all kinds of fixing's on the table. Here are some of the delights that were created that morning...

Kids Crafts: Caterpillar

What do you do with your toilet paper and paper towel rolls? I usually recycle them but my sister had a new twist to the concept of recycling. She cut them up, brought some markers, pipe cleaners and googly eyes along and was ready to get crafting with the kiddos. I supplied the heavy duty plastic, yarn and glue. See...I contribute. LOL.

The boys had a blast creating their creatures. They are so blessed to have such an awesome aunt.

Kids Crafts: Water Painting

The craft was Promises idea and the boys loved it. We painted using water colors. They look really pretty here. Unfortunately the sun has bleached out the colors. So we might re-do them this spring.

They are drying on the paper towels but don't kid yourself - my heavy duty plastic was definitely utilized and protected the kitchen table very well thank you very much. LOL.

Kids Crafts: Colorful Magnets

Anyone out there struggle with crafty things for kids? I do. Notice the heavy duty plastic that is guarding my table? And this isn't even paint.

Actually this was a fun activity for the boys and their cousins. The wood magnets came in a set of three from our local craft store - markers included. Gotta love when all the planning is done for you!

Barber decided that a blue monkey was in order for the day. It matches the kitchen...

Even adults can join in the coloring fun - especially if their little ones lose interest.

Pool Party Cake

It's been a long time since I last posted here but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy creating and doing - cakes, hats, blankets, more hats, etc. More about all of that later.

This summer, Jeter wanted to have a pool party. Unfortunately June was a rainy month and July was a heavily scheduled month so his celebration was postponed until August. Regardless of the time delay, he loved it and his friends did too. Thankfully it was a beautiful day.

Here was the spread - which was devoured so quickly!

Above is the cake that I had fun creating. BTW, that is a beach ball with his age. The top is the sandy shore and the bottom of course, are the oceans waves. He tells me he wants another pool party next year. The question is - do I simply repeat the design and change the number to a "9" or come up with a new variation of this one?

Barber's NASCAR Birthday Cake

I was ready to create Jimmy Johnson's #48 car as a 3-D cake for Barber's birthday party but he told me that he wanted a cake that was like a racetrack - which he could put cars onto. The result was the above cake. It was simpler to create than my original idea but it was exactly what he wanted. His smiling face was all this mama needed to see anyway!

Community Connectors: NICU blankets

In February, those participating in Community Connectors made hats and scarves which were donated to those in need. This past April we made some blankets for the NICU at a local hospital. Some crocheted (that was me!), others made the no sew fleece blankets and still others got out their sewing machines and created rag quilts. This is something that I would like to learn how to do. All in good time.

Here are the baby blankets that I crocheted and prayed for the little ones that may need a touch from our Father's hand as they are snuggled up in the blankie. I'm looking forward to making some more!

Scrubbies

I found this wonderfu blog Crochet Patterns Only by Granny Judith. She posted this pattern for a scrubbie and I just had to try it. It took a little time but I like the final result.

Promises said she would test them for me and she said she liked both the scrubbies and the sponges but she preferred this shape over the rectangular one.

It's just another fun way to get those dishes clean and only smell clean...not the odor of a smelly old sponge.

Washcloths

I still love my dishcloths and use them often (to wipe down counters, tables, hands and mouths) but since I learned how to make these crocheted washcloths, this is what I use to clean my dishes. It fits perfectly in my hand and has become a household favorite. Even Simms likes these. It just makes more sense. Why fold a dishcloth in two? Now there is no need. It still has the appeal of a dishcloth and is able to be cleaned in the washer/dryer with other towels. A wonderful addition to any kitchen in my book!

Spreading the Love

I told you about my new face cloths. A friend of mine suggested that I add a few rows to my face cloth and create a spa cloth for the body. I couldn't wait to get my needle in hand and yarn around my finger! The result? A wonderful spa duo!

I cannot even begin to tell you how happy these make me. Seriously, I don't know about you but I do not like those fluffy things they sell in the stores. I don't care how many times you rinse those things out, I think there is still soap and old skin cells left on there. What are they going to do? Well, in my brain I start seeing the multiplication of bacterial cells and I simply cringe at the thought of using that to clean my body. Ugh. This is why these make me happy. I can now use one each time I shower and then clean them when I do the laundry. If you don't have a happy dance, let me tell you, you need to get one. These make me do a happy dance.

I like them so much I decided to make multiple sets as a "thank you" for the wonderful ladies I work with at church. Here are nine of the sets. I actually had to make nineteen!

For the Face

How do you wash your face? Do you use your hands and simply splash the water against your face to remove soap like you see in the commercials? If so, how in the world do you keep water from splashing all over you and the floor?

I obviously don't do that. In the past I've always used a washcloth but not anymore. I've applied my crochet skills to create a double sided 100% cotton cloth that I cannot imagine ever washing my face without. I applied the same type of pattern used for the rugs but on a much smaller scale. It is so soft against my skin and my skin feels really soft afterwards - almost like it's been exfoliated!

So I went a little nuts! Actually I gave a bunch of these away to friends and family. I can't keep all the fun to myself.

Up close and personal...seriously doesn't that just look so soft?!?

A trio like this was wrapped up and made a wonderful Mother's Day gift for some special mama's I know!

Boy or Girl?

They didn't know. They wanted it to be a surprise. This was the perfect cake to celebrate the pending birth of God's creation. They enjoyed eating the cake. I had fun making it. Oh and the baby...it's a precious little girl!

Community Connectors and Family

My hands have been busy crocheting for the family and for Community Connectors.

Hat and scarf combo for me. I know both my mom and sister liked this.

Hats for family

Hats for Community Connectors. I used the same pattern for each of these however altered the size of needle to create hats for different head sizes. Varying the type of yarn also altered the final product. These were quite simple and fun to make. I was able to complete one in about 30 minutes.

For the Babies

This is a new pattern that I found. It was actually for a large afghan and I downsized it. It is reversible. Essentially I had to crochet two afghans and then put them together. It was definitely a lot of work but who wouldn't be happy with a snugly blanket times two?!? Granted, the baby won't know any different but the mama might love it.

This next afghan is based on the extension of the Granny square. This is the typical baby afghan that I have come to love. I took a close up so you could see the edging. I just love it!

Colorful Family Fun

Here are some before and after pics. It doesn't truly represent the entire step-by-step. That is one film that I need to find and develop (pre-digital camera).

The "tie" portion of the process. We used rubber bands instead of string. Much easier. The shirts above are tied for the swirl (those would be the ones in the circular shape), mirror image and bulls-eye. Tied up, the last two look the same - what makes the different is how you fold the shirt before it is tied.

Here is an after shot of a shirt that was folded and tied for mirror image. This was for Rayda. Below is Poppy's - also a mirror image.

Long Island Presents

These were supposed to go out to LI in December...around Christmas time. That didn't happen. I am finally getting around to it. Our family had fun with learning various tie-dye techniques and we were very pleased with the results. Hopefully they love them as much as we do.

This is the pile that I have to wrap, label, box and send.

This is Bones' bandanna using the swirl pattern. Good Guy is getting one of these too.

This is a pretty top for Bones' and and Frida's little one. No approved blog name for her yet. We also did the same thing for Ling.

Frida's tee. I just love the colors and the variation.

Monkey Girls' Tee. This pattern was used for Mama Mia and UncleB - just different colors for theirs.

Knuckles' tee. We used this pattern for Mickey's and Apes' tees too.

Good Guy's tee. We used the same tying method as Bone's tee but didn't' start in the center.

Do You See What I See?

I see...

the potential. This is actually the beginning of another hat for Community Connectors. But when I see and feel the yarn there are so many ideas that spin in my head. This yarn would be great in a baby blanket or another style of hat or maybe a scarf. It's so cozy and yet has an elegant flair.

I think that is one of the things I enjoy about crocheting. I see the potential and then I am able to create something that I or someone I love can enjoy and be blessed with.

Bus Driver's Request

Obviously, I've been making a lot of hats. Jeter has 3 hats that he's been alternating between. One afternoon when I was picking him up from the bus stop, the bus driver motioned for me to come to the bus. When I did she exclaimed "I want a hat!"

The next day Jeter presented her with this hat which I crocheted and prayed for her as I made it. I really enjoy giving people gifts - especially if I know that it is something that will mean something to them.

My Nephews Cakes

My sister is the one who first encouraged me to try my hand at decorating cakes. I still remember getting her email at work February 2003. She was asking me what theme I was going to have for Jeter's second birthday. First of all I was thinking "umm...birthday party...is that a theme?" I was also wondering why she was emailing me now since his birthday wasn't for another 3 months. Needless to say she inspired me to throw him a Thomas the Tank Engine themed party and the rest is history - which is all her fault! LOL.

Since I didn't get started with this until after Jeter's first birthday, he never had a Teddy Bear Cake. This cake became the traditional cake in our family for the first birthday. Below is Smiles Cake

Barber's Hat

The next three hats are actually ones that I crocheted yesterday while watching the Cardinals and the Steelers triumph! They are going to be donated in March to The Streets Ministry at our church.

This one is a bit elegant with golden flecks throughout but don't

let that fool you. It is still able to keep your head warm.

Fuzzy Hat - front view and side view (below)

Because of the colors I don't see anyone but a girl wearing this. It's really soft.

My boys (Jeter specifically) want me to buy some yarn like this in "boyish" hues.

above) but I used a larger crochet needle and the yarn is bulkier. It is super warm!

More afghans! Actually I made these last fall. One is for a baby boy and the other a baby girl. I already know which mama is going to receive the baby boy afghan. Still praying for the little girl and working on more in the meantime.

I know that typically baby blankets use pastels but I just loved the yumminess of the chocolate. I love both of these and if I was having more babies I would want to keep them myself. But I'm not so I'll enjoy blessing a mommy-to-be.

Simms' Squares

Remember the afghan I made for my mom? This is one I made for Simms. A portion of it anyway. I increased the size of the squares and gave it a simple edge for a more masculine feel.

Each square measures 15"x15" and the afghan is made 3 squares wide by 5 squares long. Does that make sense? Anyway, with the border and edging it measure 53"x 84-1/2" which is a good size for someone who is 6 feet tall.

It's winter so I decided that I could crochet a hat. Thankfully my son Jeter loves them! Unfortunately, I only have a picture on one to show you right now. I'll be sure to post more later.

Mom's Afghan

This isn't the original granny square I learned, but it is a basic square. The original pattern was for a baby blanket where each square was only 5 rows. I've obviously changed it and connected the squares differently than the original pattern. That's one of the things I've enjoyed the most - being able to use the foundation of a pattern and change it to create something that I have in mind. So this is one of the squares that consists of 8 rows (4 of the solid color and 4 of the variegated). You do also see the border in this picture - the creamy white color around the edge.

Then I changed it up a bit. Crocheted some squares with all 8 rows of the same color or reversed the solid and multi color. Finally arranged the squares and connected them. This afghan was a gift to my mom. She loves purple and green. There are actually 5 rows (the bottom row got cut off) but that row is identical to the first so you get the gist. I don't think this picture shows off the detail of the edging super well. I'll have to consider a close up on that in the future.

Crochet: Area Rugs - Squares

When I first learned to crochet, it was my Gramma that taught me how to make a Granny Square. That was when I was a teenager. Fast-forward about 20 years to when I first was staying at home with my boys. I decided I wanted to re-learn how to crochet and realized how much I enjoy it.

Below is the first area rug I made. It was done with scraps of yarn and created a pattern with the squares. I created 6 patterns and made two of each. Then chose a color to connect them and create the border.

One thing that I love about these is the vibrancy of the colors and the semi-randomness of the pattern even though there are two of each design. That is my right and left attempting to cooperate! One thing I didn't like is the flimsy-ness of it. I think I might try to use two-ply of the yarn rather than just one.

Crochet: Area Rugs

I've always admired the colonial style of braided rugs. Reading the Little House series with Jeter, it was interesting to learn about how they would tear old material into strips, braid them and then sew them together to form area rugs for their home.

My version isn't authentic. I certainly didn't sew or use strips of old material. Rather, I purchased yarn with the colors I was interested in. Then, armed with my crochet needle, I created my version of the braided rug.

This is Jeter's - I used two shades of blue and a creamy white.

For Barber's I used a dark blue, tan and creamy white.

I'm learning that there are other things out there that I actually enjoy and am even pretty good at. Although, I'll easily admit that I first picked up the crochet needle and a ball of yarn because I was new to this staying-at-home deal and needed a sense of completion. A concrete example of something that I did that day. The result was my first basic granny square.
